What I Specialize In

Riverside & Meadow Walks

Curated routes along stone bridges and riverside paths across the Boyne Valley. I've tested every trail personally to ensure they're genuinely accessible for older walkers—checking gradients, surface conditions, and rest points along the way.

Heritage Trail Documentation

Deep historical research combined with practical accessibility assessment. From Trim Castle's ancient pathways to Newtown Abbey's hidden ruins, I connect the stories with the realities of visiting them safely.

County Meath Route Development

Over 300 kilometres of personally documented trails across Meath. I've worked with retirement communities to understand what actually matters—distance, terrain, facilities, and the stories behind each location.

Senior-Focused Accessibility

Accessibility isn't abstract to me—it's personal. I apply gerontological principles and direct feedback from older walkers to every route I recommend, making sure retirement means exploring more, not less.

My Story in Heritage & Walking Routes

I started working as a tour guide along the Boyne Valley back in 2009. That's where I noticed something that bothered me—older visitors kept asking for routes that didn't require scrambling over stiles or walking on uneven surfaces, and the information just wasn't there. So I decided to do something about it.

I pursued formal qualifications because I wanted to get it right. My BA from Maynooth covered Irish history and geography—the foundations for understanding what these places actually mean. Then came the diploma in Accessible Tourism from Dublin's Institute of Tourism Studies. That gave me the framework to think systematically about accessibility instead of just guessing.

Since 2015, I've been walking. A lot. I've personally documented over 300 kilometres of trails across County Meath, testing them in different seasons, noting where the muddy patches appear in winter, where the sun creates shade at different times of year. My accessibility audit of Trim Castle in 2018 became a model that other heritage sites have adopted—it proved you can be thorough without being dry.

Working at greentownaccountants Solutions lets me do this at scale. I'm not just writing about routes anymore—I'm leading the editorial strategy for heritage-based wellness content. That means combining rigorous historical research with the practical realities of how bodies move through space as we get older. Every recommendation I make comes from somewhere real: either my own feet on the path or direct feedback from the retirement communities I've worked with.

Research & Contributions

My work focuses on making heritage sites genuinely accessible, not just compliant. Here's what I've accomplished.

2018

Trim Castle Accessibility Audit & Pathway Assessment

Comprehensive field study documenting all approach routes, terrain conditions, rest facilities, and accessibility improvements for older visitors. This audit became a model adopted by Irish Tourism Board for heritage site evaluation across the Midlands region.

Newtown Abbey Ruins: Historical Context & Accessible Exploration Guide

Detailed historical research combined with practical guidance for visiting this 12th-century monastic site. Includes mapping of safe routes through the ruins, explanation of archaeological features, and recommendations for visitors with different mobility needs.

Boyne Valley Riverside Walking Series

Ongoing documentation of over 20 distinct riverside and meadow walks across the valley. Each route includes historical background, difficulty assessment, seasonal considerations, and real photographs from field testing. Routes are specifically designed for retirees seeking low-impact outdoor experiences.

Senior-Friendly Trail Design: Principles & Practice

Research paper presenting gerontological accessibility principles applied to heritage trail documentation. Addresses practical considerations like surface gradient, rest point placement, seasonal surface changes, and nearby facilities. Published through greentownaccountants Solutions' editorial platform.

Research Accessibility Design

"Retirement should open new opportunities for exploration, not limit them. Every route I recommend, every trail I document—I'm thinking about the person who's walked these hills their whole life but whose knees aren't what they used to be. They deserve to keep exploring."

How I Approach This Work

I test every route personally. Not just walking them once—I walk them in different seasons, at different times of day, in different weather. I check where the mud accumulates in winter, where the sun creates shade in summer, where the wind picks up along exposed sections. I note the benches that exist and the ones that should exist.

I work directly with retirement communities because accessibility isn't theoretical to me. It's listening to someone describe their concerns about uneven surfaces and then understanding exactly what they mean because I've felt my own foot catch on those surfaces. It's knowing that a "gentle slope" on paper might feel very different to someone managing arthritis.

The historical research matters just as much. Understanding why Trim Castle was built where it was, why the stone bridges cross at those particular points, what Newtown Abbey meant to the community around it—that context makes the walking experience richer. I'm not just documenting paths. I'm connecting people to the stories embedded in the landscape.
